Relief
We had our final ultrasound this morning. We've been going to a fetal medicine specialist for periodic ultrasounds to make sure that everything is developing properly (which everything is) so we've gotten a few more (and later) ultrasounds than most people which has been fun.
We've been going to prenatal classes once a week as well. These have been really helpful in providing information and preparing us for the entire labor and delivery process. While I like having all the information just in case something should happen, I personally have been terrified at the thought of having a c-section. I know many people have them and they are a fairly safe procedure, but the procedure is filled with the few things in the world that scare me - needles/drugs near my spine and being strapped down and unable to move. One reason a person may have a c-section is because the baby is breach or in a transverse lie (laying across the abdomen). Since our baby started out transverse, I have been having a lot of worry about whether the baby was in the wrong position and would require a c-section. I had a little talk with the baby after that class and said it needed to get moving to where it was supposed to be. Apparently it listened! (See, communication is key!) The ultrasound today showed the baby head down (way down) and facing the right direction. Woohoo! Now it just needs to keep that position (which most babies do) and we need to work together once it's ready to come out. Either way, I am much calmer and less worried now.
This was also the last chance to accidentally find out if it is a boy or a girl (which we don't want to know) and the tech was great and said she didn't even take images of that area (they were focusing more on organs, spine, blood flow stuff)and the doctor didn't say anything either. It's not in my chart so it will be a true surprise! Yay! I like surprises:)
They took bone and abdomen measurements as well today. We are definitely having a big fat (and probably hairy headed) baby. The images they got of the brain were a little blurry and the doctor said that was because there was either a lot of fat or a lot of hair on the head. My brother and I both had lots of hair when we were born so that is what I'm thinking (no fathead babies here ;) ). Our baby is currently measuring at about 6lbs (I'll be 34wks tomorrow so I have 3-6wks left). The tech said that is 80th percentile which means it's not so big that we need to worry about it getting too big, but it will likely still be a big baby. I was anticipating this since both of our mothers had babies over 8lbs, but it's still a little shocking. A few weeks ago we met one of our friends' newborn and she was just around 7lbs when we got to hold her (she was just under 7 when she was born). I remember looking at her and wondering if ours would be bigger than that even. The answer is likely yes. It does make me feel better about the huge belly I'm carrying around. There is a lot of baby to carry, apparently :) I went shopping for some warm weather maternity clothes yesterday. Looking in the mirror felt like the guy in the Taco Bell commercial who tries to smuggle nachos under his shirt. I could easily fit a couple shelves of nachos in my belly right now. MMMMMMMMM nachos. I think I know what I want for dinner :)
